Letterpress is a centuries old technique using movable metal type. This process allowed me to explore my interest in typography. It requires selecting the fonts and paper, setting each of the letters and spacer pieces and then working the printing press. In my letterpress pieces I overprinted quotes from one of my favorite authors onto unique lithographs I had developed for these two works.
Collagraphy is a unique process whereby one composes and then builds a plate in relief. The plate is then inked and run through a press transferring the ink and texture to the paper. The height or depth of the relief need be only very slight. It is also deceptively simple looking process that requires patience and creative flexibility.
In the "Renaissance" series a large portion of the print is from the texture of dried leaves cut into a square pattern. The pattern is based on a floor plan from the 15th century and shows a just opening seed pod in the center. Collagraphy can also be done inkless which just laves white on white raised textures in the paper. This is shown with the "In Homage" print which joins together using chine colle with a lithograph of mine.
